“The Greatness of Labor” is a theory that believes that all work, whether done by hand or by the mind, is important and worthy of respect in its own right. Under this thinking, no profession or service is considered inferior, but rather it is recognized that every honest effort is necessary for the betterment and development of society. Its basic points include respecting every worker, believing that physical labor is essential to the social fabric, and fostering an environment where all professions are valued. This attitude is the guarantor of social harmony and national development.
It cannot be ignored that in the offices of developed countries there is no such job as a peon. There, every employee does not feel ashamed to do small tasks along with his/her responsibilities. Unfortunately, even as Muslims, we consider such tasks against our dignity, although the real dignity lies in honesty and service, not in considering any task inferior.
Dignity of Labour: A Lesson for Our Society
No labor is insignificant. Just as the thought of a scholar, the leadership of a leader, and the guidance of an expert are essential, so too is the labor of a laborer, a day laborer, a sweeper, a farmer, a cart puller, a shopkeeper, and a clerk indispensable to our lives. If we consider the work of a cleaner to be insignificant and ignore its importance, and if he stops his work for just two days, then this civilized urban environment of ours will immediately begin to present a scene of hell. Similarly, if a cobbler stops his work and we want to maintain our social status, we will be forced to repair our own shoes. Therefore, the truth is that all kinds of labor are honorable and valuable, and after all, we are all laborers in our own place. It is a matter of great regret that even in our modern times, people in our subcontinent are subjected to social classification based on their work, and as a result, they are considered to have different statuses. We often look down on the worker without whose hard work we could not have achieved our seemingly high status. This attitude is very regrettable. History is a witness that no nation, which judges human beings by such unfair standards, has ever been able to make real progress. In developed countries, workers are respected and all kinds of hard work are encouraged. We too should learn a lesson from these nations and give the hard workers their rightful place.
All the great creations of the world have come into being only through hard work. The pyramids of Egypt, Edison’s light bulb, and the inventions of modern technology—all of these are the fruits of hard work and constant struggle. The truth is that no success in the past, present, or future is possible without hard work.
Finally, a famous saying comes to mind: “A man’s best friends are his own ten fingers.” This is absolutely true, but we should not forget that physical labor and mental labor complement each other, and without both, progress in life is not possible.
