Learn Passive Voice Past Simple in Just 5 Minutes

Passive Voice Past Simple Verbs are words that are used with a subject to tell what a person or thing does or what happens to it. Sometimes they are also used simply to express a state or condition. Verbs can be used in different tenses according to time and situation. One of them is the “simple past” which is used for actions that have been completed before the present time. When a simple past sentence is changed to the passive voice, the third form of the verb (Past Participle) is used with “was” or “were”. In this case, the object of the sentence becomes the subject.

How to Make Passive Voice Past Simple Sentences

To form Passive Voice Past Simple sentences, “was/were” is used as an auxiliary verb and the third form of the main verb (Past Participle). In this case, the subject becomes the object of the active voice and the object becomes the object of the passive voice. The following rules are adopted to form passive sentences:

First, the object of the active voice is made the subject of the passive voice.
Then, “was” or “were” is used according to the subject of the passive voice.
The third form of the verb (Past Participle) is used.
“by” is added to show the doer of the action.
The subject of the active voice is changed to the object of the passive voice.
Finally, if there are more words in the sentence, they are also added.

Simple Past Positive Passive Sentences

To form simple past tense sentences, “was/were” is used as an auxiliary verb and the third form of the main verb (Past Participle). To form a Positive Sentence, the following rules are followed:

The subject of the active voice is changed to the subject of the passive voice.
“was” or “were” is used according to the new subject.
The third form of the verb (Past Participle) is added.
“by” is added to show the doer.
The subject of the active sentence is changed to the subject of the passive sentence.
If there are more words in the sentence, they are added at the end.
The formula is as follows:
Subject + was/were + Past Participle + by + Object + Remaining word
